The City Of Riverdale Unites To Raise School Supplies For Students In Severe Need
Riverdale,
GA (Pitchengine.com) September 15, 2014 - The final days of summer are
quickly rolling by and television are filled with back-to-school
commercials, sales and advertisements reminding parents to purchase new
folders, binders, pencils, pens, backpacks and school clothes for their children.
But what about the segment of families who can not afford to partake in
the back-to-school ritual that so many have grown accustomed to taking
for granted? The Mayor & Council of Riverdale present the GET FIT! Riverdale - 5K Run/Walk to help the every growing segment of "underserved" families by raising school supplies, funding and awareness. The USATF certified fitness fundraiser will take place at Riverdale Town Center on Saturday, September 20th, The run will commence at 7:30am, with check in beginning at 6:30am.
Over
20% of children in the United States live in poverty? With those
statistics that means 16 million children will begin the 2014 school
year without basic school supplies. When
asked about her motivation for developing the 5K initiative, Riverdale
Council Member Wanda Wallace stated,"About 6 years ago, I battled with a
heart condition and I learned I needed to exercise more and eat
healthier...as a public figure I wanted to serve as an example of
healthy living and promote health & fitness."
Riverdale council member Wallace states her objectives for the GET FIT! Riverdale - 5K Run/Walk initiative
are community involvement, health education, and to increase the
dialogue with local & state government to make sure each and every
child deserves to have access to the school supplies needed to learn
thereby keeping their minds and bodies active.
The GET FIT! Riverdale - 5K Health & Fitness event
is a fundraiser to create a bank of school supplies to support the
public schools in Riverdale. 5K participants are encouraged to donate
unused school supplies (pencils, backpacks, paper, crayons,
etc.) Registration is $15 for adults and $5 for children under 12. If
you are not able to run/walk, you can still donate school supplies at
the Riverdale Town Center. The proceeds of the GET FIT! Riverdale - 5K Health & Fitness will
benefit the school supply bank for the public schools of Riverdale.
Civic organizations, businesses and individuals are encouraged to
participate in the run/walk, to register go to www.riverdaleculture.com.
